Tomasz Wlodarczyk
Tomasz Wlodarczyk is a PhD student pursuing a degree in Environmental Science at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on identifying and studying native plant species that accumulate and tolerate heavy metals. In his PhD program, Tomasz collaborates with researchers from The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) at the intersection of phytoremediation and green chemistry. He is also a member of the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining at the University of Arizona (CESM).
Tomasz conducts extensive in-situ surveys of legacy mine sites and natural outcrops in the U.S. Southwest using a portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer (pXRF). With this approach, he can rapidly characterize metal contents in thousands of plants spanning various plant families. After data acquisition, his plan is to develop a reproducible pipeline for data integration into a database, following open science principles, to make the data widely accessible. This will enable mining companies and researchers to make informed decisions regarding plant selection for various environmental purposes, such as phytoremediation, revegetation, or metal recovery.
